How to revert back to the date that a document was first saved (Word 2003-2010)

Whenever you open an old Word document or template containing a date field, it will replace the original date in the document with the current date, causing frustration and confusion. (When you click on the date and it turns grey, you know it is a field.) So what if you stumble upon such a document and you want to revert back to the date the Word document was first saved?

Here's how:

  1. Right-click the date field and select Toggle Field Codes from the drop-down list.
  2. Change the DATE or TIME word inside the code to CREATEDATE.
  3. Right-click the date field and select Toggle Field Codes from the drop-down list.
  4. If necessary, right-click the date field and select Update Field from the drop-down list.
