specify which program is automatically used (Windows)

The other day somebody asked me how he could change the default application Windows uses to open music and audio files. Well, some time ago Microsoft introduced an option that simplified the configuration process if you'd rather use non-Microsoft applications. So let's say you want to make iTunes the default application for music and audio files rather than Windows Media Player.

Here's how:

  1. Click the Start button
  2. Click Set Program Access and Defaults
  3. Click on Custom.
  4. Under "Choose a default media player", click iTunes.
  5. Click OK.

Happy listening! (Mind you, this process can also be used to specify, for example, a different email program or Web browser.)

Until next week.
