Weekly Computer Tip # 272
13 June 2009

Start each week with a free tip

Close a window without clicking in the upper-right corner (Office 97-2007)

Have you ever accidentally closed an application when you simply wanted to close the active document? (I have!) You know what I mean ... you have a Close button on the title bar of the document and there's also one on the title bar of the application window (such as Word) itself, both very close to one another - and you just picked the wrong one. Well, this is a great tip to quickly close a window without having to click on the Close button in the upper-right corner of the window.

Here's how:

  1. press CTRL+W

If you did not save changes in your document, you will be prompted to indicate whether or not you want to save those changes, as normal.

With special thanks to Leon Dessels who told our users during last week's Train the Trainer workshop this tip, which was new to them - and me! It's been my favourite keyboard shortcut since, Leon - thanks!

By the way, if you are interested to find out more about our Train the Trainer workshop, drop me a line.

Until next week.
